An audience tbat would have been a credit to the f'oremost actora of the day was present at the opera house on Friday evenlng to hear the Michigan University Glee Club in thelr college songs and nonsense. The programme was varied, iust such a musical melange as college student8 are capable of. The seIection8 were inclined toward the liumorOU8, which indeed, the audience heartlly enjoyed, but the bailada were all sung with charming effect, precisión and perfect harmouy being observed ia every selection. The warbling of Mr. Plttnian and the flute-toned whistling of Mr. Clark were received with prolonged applause. The chair drill was something unique, and took the house by storm" The club, during their stay in Ottawa were hnndsomely entertalned by Mr. and BIn. Alfred H. Taylor. The entertainment consista of the drainatizatiou of an old English bailad, entitled, "The Blind Beggar of Bethnal Greene." The ballnd is one of the most popular ever wrttten in Englaiid. lts plot or story is briefly this: Siinon de Montfort, the great Earl of Leicester, was killed in the bnttle of Evusham, Aug. 4, 1265 at the head of the revolted barons. His eldeat son, Henry, was reported as slaln but was according to the bailad, saved by a princesa who finaly married him. Fearinjí he would be executed for bil part in the uprising, he lived for many years as the blind beggar of Bethnal Green. Bessie, his daughter, sets forth to seek her fortune. She has many suitors but they all turn f "rom herupon learnin" that ahe is the daughter of a blind beg ger, except a younjr knight. He delerinines to marry her despite the protestations of his relativos and friends. At the marriage feast Bessies father appears as a rainstrel and sinffs tlie romnnce of his life to the astonished company. The bailad will be read by the talented elncutionist, Miss Scrafford. Mrs. Uigains and Mr. Boyle have the management. A great amount of time has been spent on the acting and upon the costumes of tUe time.
