In Uic Chicago municipal election on the 5th the Itepublican ticket was elected by inajorities ranging from 25,000 to 38,000 over the United Labor vote. There wa no Democratie ticket in the field, a largo majority of the Demócrata voting for the HepubUcan candidates, as against the Socialistic element in the Labor party. John A. Koelie was elected mayor by a majority of 28,031. The total vote was : Roche, 61,210; Nelson (Labor), 23,179. The Now Jersoy Legislature on the 5th possed a bilí making the first Monday in September a legal holiday to be known as Labor Day. At the Wisconsin State election on the 5th tho only office to be fllled by a vote of the people at large was that of Associate Justico of the Supreme Court. There was no opposltion to the re-election of the present incumbent, H. S. Orton, whose term will expire January, 1888. The inaictments recently found against present and former commissioners of Cook Couuty, 111., number 200, and against wardens and contractors 102. Mrs. Mart McAvoy died on the 5th at Lancaster, Pa., aged 103 years. She was a native of Ireland, but came to this country early in the present century.
