The Aun Arbor studenU and citizens have verifled tbe niaxlra, "A Ilttle learnlng isa dangerous thlng," by the petty lndignitles oonteraplated agalnst Oov. Luce, at tne anntversary of the "Varsity. "- Three Rlvers Tribune. And a few editora in the State have demonstrated tlie fact thnt they can write leamedly(?) upon a subject they know nothing about, and tlie editor of the Tribune is one of 'em. Had Gov. Luce come to Ann Arbor, as he ought to have donr, he would Jiave been treated wiih all the respect bis oftice should have brought to hiiu. He would have been entertained by the mayor of our city, who is one of our wealthy and hospitable citizens. But lie didn't come and somo of hls admirers now seek to excuse bim for shirking his duty by the cry that some boy or girl student at Ann Arbor would have made up a face at him, if he had done so. For shame ! The editor of the Three Kivers Tribune is informed that nelther the studente at the University or the citizens of Ann Arbor, are hoodlums or sand-lot-ers, but gentlemen and ladies, and can give their traducers pointe on what belonjs to good manners any day in the week. It is a shamfi that an editor of a reputable journal should attempt to spread a wrong impression among the people by such misrepresentationa. There was not a tbing said or a thing done that Gov. Luce or his most ardent admirer could have taken the least exceptions to during tlie entire commencement, nor would there have been if that official had been present, and the above assertion, made with the direct intent of creating dice against the University is nothing more nore less than dtrt. Secondhaud dirt at that, fur it originally appeared in a Detroit paper that has left no stone uiiturned to rnisreprcsent the University and its fricnds. The Michigan legislatura peformed a wise nnd beneficient act when it passed the blll to prevent gambling n stocks, bonds or produce, and to prohibit the renting of buildings for such purposes. Tliis small dabbling in produce and stocks in what are known as bucket shops, is one of the most pernicious kinds of speculation. It is every bit as denioralizing as eards. The risk of loss ia a bucket shop is exactly as great as it is at a faro table. Besides tliis that evil liabit - the irresistible desire of making money on a chance venture is contracted and it Is a difficult matter to free one'sself from tliis thralldom. Many a man with a respectable competence bas lost it all by frequenting bucket shops. If men cannot conserve their own interests with wisdom and thrift It is the duty of the law makers to help them to it. Michigan, in lier state univereity at Arm Arbor, bas an institution of wbicli she may well be proud, and wliirh she can poorly nfford to stint or stnrve. There is no single institution in the state more wortby of the best she has to give. A great ins'.ilution of learning Is not built in a ilay or a year, but after a generatíon has given it the benefit of its brightest and best minds and bodies. - Chicago ínter Ocean.
