The First Unitarian Society of Aun Arbor, was organized in the old court houso. January 21st, 1807, untler the miiiistrations of Kev. Charles H. Brigham. The next inontli the society began occupying the old M. K. Church on the S. W. corner of 5th and Ann streets, which thcy Eooii uflcr purchased. llere thcy worshipped until the autumn of 1882 whtn they removed to tlieir new etone edifico on the corner of State and Iluron streets. Mr. BrlgfeMB was pastor of tlie society for ten yenrs, resigninj; on account of impaiicd health la the sumruer of 1877. The next yenr the pulpit wss oocupled hy J H. Allen. In the autumn of 1878 Hev. J. T. Sunderland wassettled and has been in charge of the society from that time until the present with the exception of two yenrp, from July 1884 to July 18S6, when he was away on leave of absence The new clmich and lot cost $15,000, and the organ, chiirch furniture and library somethiug over $3,000 more. The library. wliith contains nearly 20O0 volumes, is a very cholee collection, - in works of broad, advanced religious thouylit anl scholarship beini surpassed by few librarifs In tlie country. It Is open for public usc on Siiini.i ys, free. Memben of the clmrch and congregatiou draw books without charge, others pay one dollar a year. A readlng room alsoisniauitained n coiinecüon with the librury, and here nol mily liberal rcliüious papers but the best magazines and reviews are to be found. In 1S8JJ a lot was bought adjoining the church on the north, on which s parsonuge costing f3,000 was built. There are about lifty families connected wlth tlie society. The Unily Club, wliich s litsrary and social in ts alm, and has come to be one of the instltutions of the city, has now been going on for nine years. The present trustees of the church are Prof. W. H. Pettee, Prof. J. W. Lanffley, J. B. Allen, Joseph Whitark, Judge W. D. llai riman and Airs. J. M. Ashley. The Secretary of the cliuiuli and society is Mr. Hcnjamiii Brown. The church and parsonage are paid for and tho society is entirely free trom debt besides liaving a fund of $1,200 the interest of wliich goes aunually to the purchase of books for tlie library.
