A young actor who essays the role of Edmund Dantes before an audienre, many of whom have but recently yhnessid James O'Niel's incomparable portrayal of the character, must expect to Buffer more or less by tlie cotnparlsor. Mr. Benedict was at th3 disadvantage last evenlng. Notwithstanding a good presentation of this great drama was made. Mr. Beuedict's impersonation shows conscientious study.and an intelligeut conception of the character. He s not in any essential respect, an imitator of Fetchter or O'Neil. Hls veralon lias many points of originallty, and perhaps, in some particulars, of superiority over other versiou8. Like O'Ncil, Mr. Benedict is wenk in the tirst act - where the role calis for the portrayal of the couimonplace - and is correspondingly effective in the stroDger passages. He is unquestionably greater in the guise of Abbe Busoni, to wliich character he briugs a certain dig nity and concentraron of energy suggestive of pownr held in reserve. Mr. Beneiliri's Dantes is easily dominant, without loslng itself in tbc clhnaxes. li is intelligent, discriminatiug, and intelligent. If there Is much in it to criticlse, there is also much to admire.- Grand Rapids Eagle. At the grand opera house next Saturday evenlng " Monte Cristo " was presented last nlght by Alden Beuedict's Monte Cristo cotnpany in a niauner almost faultless. The audlence testified their appreciation ofMr. Benedict's work by cali ing hiin three times before the curtaiu. Tlie supporting company was good throughont. Miss Sarah Farley Is worthy of special inention. Stage effecU were wonderfully realistic- St. Paul Press.
