This week the principal topic of conversation in political circles is the lelter of James G. Blaine declining to have his name presented as a camlldate before the next republican convention. There is much conjecture among politicians as to whether tliis is a final and detinite withdrawal of the great statesman from the fortbeoming contest, but amon republican leaders it is thought that it is. Mr. Blaine is regarded by thousands of his iidmirers ,is the Webster or Clny of this geneiation, and tliere can scarcely be any giiinsaying of the fact that iii breadth of view, In extensive and correct information, In abllity to leac), in skill to organize, in eloquence to couvince, he Maruis with none at hisside. However, his mnny hard-fougjhtbattles tnay now lead hiin to wish for rest and peace. He knows that the next presidential flght wHl bfl an exceeding hot one, and no one will blame hlm for nantini; to take his otium cum dignitate which he has so well earned, even tliouh they believe he could be elected easier than any other candidato. His letter is a very manly one and shows a true republlciin spirit wliitli will tend to harmony in the party.
