Bruthren. h:ive you examlned it caref 11 1 ly in all its hearings, by all parties. The great hue and cry is, "Put down the saloons, put down the saloon;, if you don't vote ayaiust tliem, then you vote for tliem." Tuis is wliat you are told. But is it so ? Let us see. Who throws the balance of power in the hands of the saloon ists? Who elect the constabulary ? etc, etc. and then teil you that a republlcan Mayor is no better than a democrat. He won't do this and that as he has sworn to do. How can be? Go ask your Hon. Mayor why he does not execute the law ? Why are the saloons so defiant? You have a law to control tliem. Will not the same power exlst if you carry prohlbitlon? Have they destroyed the evil elsewhere? VVhat say the the reports? Suppose you vote toprohlbit the saloons? Why prohibit the manufacture of beer? Is it not a legitímate business, sanctioned by Congress ? If drank temperately there is no violation of law. Then the right to manufacture. The respectable Gerinans say in Gennany it is not a disgrace to take a glass of beer, or wine, aui that openly, and so say the English. Why, they have Bass' Ale for dinner in respectable families, even amongst F rienda, and wine at suitable times. It is not the use, but the abuse, and allowing theyouth to indulge, whereiu comes the larger evil. Some of the better class of Germans say: That men have always drank and always will. It is the will of God, and no use of man trying to stop it of themselves. Wheu He wills it so, it will be done. You do not kill all beast?, birds, reptiles, inseets, etc., etc., because some are dangerous, some destructive, sorae venomouc, etc. But hold on. "Shall we vote with the churches, or the saloons?" some one asks. Which is the greater, the church or the people who make the church ? Do all go to church, or to the saloon ? There are those who are not of this fold, and were not our tbltd party doing; a ireater good In folding and churching these? Why dld they not go on progressing, and not b.mstingly seek to deslroy their allv F Do not shei'p know their mïister's voice and follow niuch better than to be diiven ? Shall we not be churitable then unto the aced, and foreigner withln our midst? Why sliut up the wine presses, and prevent the making of it, even in our homes ? If it Is right to drink a glass of wine, or use it iu our churches, or have it at the DtarHam fenst of oíd, who has the right to prohibit the makiug of it? We are taught in the cïuirches, and the holy writ to be températe in al] things, and is not temperancia greater virtue than abstluence, exsept the youth, although many are In need, and best to choose the latter. There is excess in eating very much as wcll as drink; in fashions ud dregs, (how many wives have ruined their husbands- even causing the innocent to pay tlieir legal debts cloaking under the law), in daucing and playing cards, etc, Where shall we draw the liue. Or where Is Uie land of the free so much boasted of to become the land of law ? Law for everything, but where respected or enforced ? Why, they want a law to urevent the little ones from smoking clgarettes, and next schools to train our children in the way they should grow, or go. Where are the motlier?, ask thtin. What say they. Why don't the father see to tliem. Unto the fourth party or those on the fence. Are you going to be the larger party ? What! coward?, dare not face the music. If I vote no it means I vote for the saloons, and the evil thereor, not necessarily. I am iiot particular says one, which way it goes. If local option I can make lols of nioney in giving prescriptioiis. We care not which way the stream runs, let the minority make the law. We can then get all the frec liquor we want. The evil existing, they will have it, if not openly In secret. Which is greater, the saloon, or the people who frequent it ? This reminds me of one nev., Who saiü lic UM not believe in sencüiiff missionaries unto heathen comí trle8 to destroy their idols. He believed in giving them something better to wor8bip in the place thereof. In voting no we await the enactinentof our legislaiure to take effect May lst. High license, tlie law or power to tax and control Intoxlcantf, and allow the manufacture, and also tlie rlght to make and use wine In our hornet High license practicable In all cities by the people, until we can give thern something better, in lieuthereof. liy blfb license we reduce the saloons, (liow many in Philadelphia) and cause the remaindcr to look after the secret ones. Cttns't tbou fathom the depth of the sea, Oh man, or whence riseth the tide thereof 1 Cans't thou discern the mysteries of the all-wiseone, who we read Ulked unto Satan concerning bis servunt Job, a perfect and au upright man how He gave satan power over him, to ftffliet. how many times ? but sare bis life. üid our benelicient and all-seein; Father destroy Satan ? or use him for some purpose or end ? '"God moves in a inysterious way bis wonders to perform," or teil me wliy Jesus suffe red to be tempted of tbe devll, and after saltli to him: " Get thee bebind me," or " Ix-goue Satan." Or did the master teil tbein to forgive seTtn times only. Or to stone tbe slnful WOnun, accordiiig to their law. But He that was without sin, to firt cast the stone. Boys, nstride of the fence, the pol'3 will close iu one hour, time to come and prepare your votes. Some reasuns wby I connot vote to
