Tlie deatli of Roscoe Conkling ttais morning removes from activlty a man of stal wart integrity and brillianey. From 1S68 to '83 he was a republican leader in the senate and always in debate made himself respected by his courtesy :uil feared by his powerful earcasm. He wa unswerving to his frlend, and had a higl sepse of honor whicli madb his word like gold. Had he and lilaine pulled togethe both might have been president of the country both have served so well u the senate. Last December, while East a republican league meeting it was the editor's privilege to have au hour's con versation with Mr. Conkling bout the situation in politics, through thecourtes; of Henry Melville, his partner. Jle de clared th;it though out of politics entirel; he still retained his interest in the party and wanted to see it put in nomlnation some good man llke Sheridan or Gresham For them he would have pulled oft' In coat and gone into the fight. This wouh have made New York safe, forthousaml of lii.s friends throughout the state ouly wanled a word from him to have thrown money, influence and work into a cam paign. In our talk with him he xhowec no bitteniess against Blaine, but declarec that he could get the nomination agaii if he wanted it. Mr. Conkling was more satisfied to be at the head of the New York bar tuai tbe leader of the sonate. The forme cert.ainly was the most profltable to him We are sorry to lose him from among men.
