The next highest art craft after enameling is damaseening, or the art of encrusting oae metal on another, not fa crustae , whieh are soldered on or wedfied lnto tha metal surface to which they are applled, but In the fonn of w -ire, which, by undercutting and hammeriug, is thoroughly incorporated with the metal which it is intended to ornament. Practlcally, damascening is llmited to enmisting gold wlre, and sometimos silver wire, on the surface of iron, steel or bronzo. This systeui of omamentation is jieculiarly oriental, and takes its name from Dainascus, whjre it wa8carried to the highest perfed ,he goldsmiths. It is now practised with ;he greatest 6uecess In Persia and in 8paiu. It is a curious fact that tho magnetle iron used for ages in the manufacture of Damaseus steel, and by the l'ersians for their sword blades was, and is etill obtaiued from mines in In.ll.i.
