The "Forty Immortals" re to be conjrratulated that tbey do not enter their temple of art wholly empty-handed. With the "Marriage of St. Catherine," which iras sent them by Pope Leo XIII. as a pre-natal gift, the Martyrdom of St. Audrew by Murillo, and a seaport view by Claude Lorraine, both purchased by Mr. James E. Scripps at the Leigb court sale in London in 1884 and presented by hini to the museum thc same year, there is no lack of "old raasters." Add to these a fine collectlon of Braun's autotypes presented by Mr. George VV. Balch, a pen and ink sketch by Miohaol Angelo oí a man seated, and another by Kaphael from hls Vatican tapestry group- Paul and Barnabas at Lystra - both thr gift of Mr. James E. Scripps, and there is a Ducleus for acollection of original drawings and reference photographs. Thc enes of etchings, presented by Miss Avon , of the Franciscan missions of California by Henry C. Ford pave the way to historical records of things that are rapidly passing away even in our new country. while the Rembrandt Peal ("The Court of Dealh"), presented by Mr. Scripps, is a very good conimencement íor a complete chronological series of works by leading American artlsts. Some of these are alroady represented, su:h as F. D. Millet, in his "Reading the Story of CF.none" ( picture that was much admired by visitors at the old Art Loans and afterward, through the proceeds of the Loan and private subscription, preented to the society); F. K. M. Rehn of New York, in "The Missing Vessel," purchased with the proceeds of the last exhibltion in 18S6; 3. G. Brown's "Surprise Party," purchased by the trustees irom the exhibition at the Detroit club, and a bequest of the late Wílliara W. Mürphy (who was for many years United States consul at Frankfort-on-the-Mainj, of an ideal landscape by a Frankfort artist, A. Morenstem. With these valuable picture on hand, and the collection of casts ordered, there Is no doubt that the Detroit Museum of Art will rapidly amas treatures to fill lts new buildiug.
