James Dodge, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was sent west by (Jhairman Brice, of the democratie national executivecommittee, six weeks ago on an errand of iuvestigation. He was to talk free trade to workinginen as opportunity offered. and consult the party leaders and find out whether the president's free trade polioy would go down, or whethor the mere appllcation of "tarift" reform" would be best. He said : "I was srone five weeks. During tliat time I went rapidly through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. I am very sorry that I shall haveto make a very discouraging report to the committee if they wnnt to know the facts. Ohlo will aurely go republican. Indiana will give Harrison a reasonablemíijority; the people there are enthusiastic over hlm, and the general cry is for his election. I believe there are places in Indiana where it is dangerous to mention Cleveland's name, but, of course there is much enthusiasm for him in large citics. Illinois, Wisconsin anrt Michigan are, I am afraid, pretty certnin to go for Harrison. In Illinois I canvassed the train, and the result was 130 for Harrison and 19 for Cleveland. Free trade is doing it. The workingmen have got protection on the brain, and are up In iirins against the democratie party." Brother Stearns, of the Adrián Press takes his free wooly disposition and sugar tariff temper into the canvas with him.
