It Is seldom that a communit.y ia more staitled b' any occurrence tlian ours luis been by the suelden death of Wallaee Holloway Steele, younjjest son of the Rev. Dr. Steele, late pastor ot tlie Presbyterian chuich. He died very uuexpectedly on Monday [iioniirijr last at half past eleven o'clock trom an attack of acute diabetes, not having bcei: danger ouslv 111 more than twenty-four liours. Ilis liis-t will be Jffetitly feit by a devoted ciicle of fiiends who íoved liini for hig ffennlne wortli and inanv ('hiistiin virtues. He was boni iu New Brunswick, N. J , on the 13th day of Match, 1867, and had therefore just passed his tvventyiirst birthday. How strange it seems that he should have been taken trom our mulst at the very opening of a promising manhood. His father having accepted the charge of the Presbytcrian chuich iu our city and having removed liere with his lainily in November, 1880, Wallace afier dm preparation entered our high school, aml graduated in the class of '8ü He was chosen one of the speakers for (,'nni mencement Day and delivered an address on the theme - "Paul aud Nero - A Contrast." It was of more than ordinary ability, being characterized by origiuality, grace and power, especially for one so young tn years. He entered the University in the fall of the same year, electing the scientific course with special refereuce to cheinistry, of which study he was very fond and in which he had made remarkable progresa. His whole academie life was marked by diligence, taithfulness and devotion. Perhaps his ardent love of study may have had somethiug to do with hig early death. However tliis may be, he was a thorough student, and wouid doubtless have made himself a name in hli chosen Unes, If God iu Ilis all-wlse providence had not taken him to Himself. He united witli the Presbyterian church in his füteenth year. Since that time he was never absent from a single service of Qod'i House until two weeks ago and was always present at cominunion seasons. He was an earuest, single-minded, consistent Christian,- "anlsraellte indeed, in whom there was no equal." With no ostentatious pretensión and no hypocritical cant, he was anxious to be like his Divine Master, ''goinji about doiug good." In all the relations of life, a? a son, a brother, a member of the church, a student, and as secretary of the Hobart Guild, it may be said of him with perfect truthfulness, "well done, good and faithful servant." Such a Ufe Is a comfort to his sorrowing fainily, a glory to the chuich, a benediction to the community. We caniot understand why such a one should have been taken from this world so suddenly and so soon, where he might have been as his years were multiplied, ncreasingly useful and helpful to lils fellow-rnen We cannot know now, but weshall know hereafter. And so with eyes dlmmed in tears, we will commit the mortal remaius of Wallace Holloway Steele, student, christian, brolher, to his last retting place in the full assurance of a joyful resurrection, beciuse we know that "blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." Samuel Eabf. Funeral Thursday at 2'.i p. m. from the house, 43 Fifth st. Hurial at Elmwood Cetnetery, Detroit, Friday a. in. on arrival of Atlantic Express.
