CHELSEA - The Chelsea Board of Education has agreed to answer questions about the suspension last week of 223 students at Chelsea High School during an open meeting at 8 p.m. Monday in the high school auditorium.
The board action came in response to parental demands that board members explain their position on the suspensions. At this week's school board meeting board members refused to discuss the issue although they agreed to listen to parents who had some comments.
Charles Cameron, superintendent, at that time, said the board would discuss the action after students had been readmitted to classes.
Charles Lane, Chelsea principal, said today all but three students had been readmitted and were now attending classes. Lane previously had said he would readmit students only after individual conferences with parents.
The three students who remain suspended are Joe O'Neill, Mark Collins and Tom Lixey. All are seniors and are characterized by Lane as leaders of a student demonstration protesting the cancellation by Lane of a contract with the rock band Up which is affiliated with Ann Arbor's Rainbow People's party.
An administration spokesman said the meeting was open to all who were interested in attending, and that members of the school board and administration would try to answer questions.
