Subversives Beware
Subversives Beware
On June 4, Attorney General William Saxbe announced that the Justice Department was dropping its "Subversive Organizations List."
After Saxbe announced that the list was being terminated, an aide explained to reporters that its abolition would have "no effect on the 52 organizations the FBI has under investigation." When startled reporters - who had never before heard of the list of 52 - asked which groups were on it, the Justice Department staff member refused to answer on the grounds that it was a secret list. When asked if this didn't amount to a new "subversive" list, assistant attorney general Kevin Maroney maintained that it was not a list at all since it wasn't written down. --LNS
