FBI Wants All-Out Wiretaps
FBI Director Clarence Kelley says he will call on Congress to give the Bureau sweeping new wiretap powers to be used against "revolutionaries who plant bombs."
Kelley charged that "leftist radicals" are responsible for most of the 2000 bombings which occur in the United States each year. He said the requirement of obtaining a court-ordered warrant before initiating a wire-tap takes too much FBI time.
Figures released by the Justice Department this month show the number of government wiretaps has increased steadily since 1969. In 1969, there were 395 court-authorized wiretaps. In 1973 that figure had grown to 1484. According to the government figures, the courts have turned down wiretap requests just 13 times since 1969.
