For the benefit of those who missed the first class held last week at Motor City College of Musical Knowledge, let me explain briefly. We'll  be meeting in this same spot every week to enumerate - and discuss if possible - the finest musical events to be presented in the immediate future. Our decisions are based on musical quality and educational value to our readers (this ain't no listing of pop-stars, kids). We usually start with the Top Ten favorites, thusly: "
"All For One" is theme of the Harbinger Dance Co. Benefit at the Showcase Ballroom, where Motown guitar whizzes Ron English and Mickey Stein get it on along with All Directions and the Mime Ensemble. Lots of entertainment in exchange for a small donation to Harbinger - it's Sept. 11, Saturday
• Jazz guitarist George Benson "masquerades" as the latest pop phenom at Pine Knob Sunday, Sept. 12
• Innovative vocalist Eddie Jefferson interprets the greats of jazz in a required course for all those with a special interest in modern jazz music - Sept. 10-12 at the new MUSIC Station in the Midtown Theatre, Third and Canfield
• Motor City music giant and multi - instrumentalist Teddy Harris displays a lifetime of talent Sept. 10 and 12 at the Northwest Activities Center, Meyers and Curtis in Detroit
• Pure "D" flows at Compared to What? coffeehouse Sept.10 when the legendary lady Sippi Wallace performs along with Louis ("Mr: Bo") Collins
• Shoo-Be-Doo's
latest new-jazz unit explores the spaceways next weekend (Sept. 17) at Compared to What? in Highland Park's Trinity Methodist Church, 13100 Woodward in Highland Park
• REGGAE at last, mon, and lots of it, in one fine Jamaican evening at the Showcase Ballroom - Horatio Bennett's Heat Wave Express, the Trinidad Bros. Steel Band, the Soulful Breed, and Lily Ferguson - Sept. 18
• The Queen of jazz vocalists is still going strong - Sarah Vaughan is her name, and she does the supper club scene at db's in Dearborn's Hyatt Regency, Sept. 14-18
• Remember when ROCK AND ROLL was the rage and "Rock" was a flaky movie star? So do the Rockets, and they make it happen again for the rug rats at the teeny-weeny Red Carpet at Outer Drive and East Warren, Sept. 8-12
• If you miss these two musical plays, go to the back of the class and clean erasers: "Selma," held over (thank you!) at the Music Hall till Sept.19, and Ron Milner's "Season's Reasons" (music by Chas. Mason) opening at the Midtown Theater, Sept. 15
• Valuable extra-curricular activity includes Boogie Woogie Red at Ann Arbor's quaint Blind Pig Cafe, Sept. 13 ; J. C. Heard nightly at Bobbie's English Pub in Southfield; the Austin-Moro big band at P'Jazz in the Pontchartrain Hotel, Sept. 10; and Mickey's Pulsating Unit (rumored to be recording soon, under the wing of Donald Byrd) at the Delta Lady Sept. 10 and 11. Class dismissed !
