Charges and counter-charges of pólice corruption. official cover-ups, media smears. and politics) scandal continued to rock Detroit for the second straight month since a front-page Detroit News articie revealed the existence of a federal Drug Enforcemenl Agency (DEA) probé into alleged narcotics activity by top-level Detroit pólice command personnel. The ensuing shock is still spreading out through the conimunity as cilizens attempt to piece together the pieces of the big puzzle: is the Coleman Young administration a corrupt, erime-ridden , crony-dominatéd "Tammany Hall" affair. as the News has charged all week, or are there forces at work committed to undermining the mayor's base ot' support in the conimunity to insure the election of a "more acceptable"' candidate I for mayor of Detroit a year from now, when the city's fïrst black mayor must stand for reelection.
