Withhy, Methodist minister, merober of the South Carolina Conference was the ownerof a number of slaves;- (wo o{" ihem were so dissaüsfied with the irealmcnt they received, that they ran away and took refuge in a ewamp. Said Rev. VVm. Withby took his rifle and went into thcswamp, declaring that he would shoot them. While hunting he discovercd one of his slaves, and" in making haste to get a shot at him, he slipped and feil tito a creek and wet his rifle, that he couid not get t off. Said Withby af-, 'envards declared that he designed tohave hot the sJave and wetting hia rifle was all that preven tcd. Bofore the slave was taken, Withby sold him to the peraon for whom the nar rator vvag then at work who sent out some of his siaves to fiad him aud inforra him that he had bouglit hm, and that he mightcome in without fear; whereupon the runawaycame immediately to hisnew master glad to get out of the hands of his clerical owner.
