The State of Vermont has one represen tative in Washington whodares avow his sentiments. The following is reportec concerning Mr. Mattocks: "Mr. MATTOCKS, of Vermont, presented the petition of Jonathon P Miller ind lGSothers, citizens and freemen of the 5th Congressional district in Vermonf, raying for the abolition of slavery and the slave trade in the District of Columbia and in the territory of Florida.Mr.M. said he wasnot about to preeent he petition for the die purpose of voting ïimself against it, but he should present it becausc he believed m his soul that the jrayer thei'eof ought tobe granted, so as o relieve this land of liberty trom the nalonul and damning 6in of slavery in this urown baili wiek, the District of Colurnbia Ie presented the petition, and moved that be referred to a select committee, consis ng of one member l'rom each State in theUnion; and on the question of reference, he demanded the yeas and nays. The question of the reception of the petition was laid on the table by a vote of 155 yeas to 28nays,all the other members from Verraont voting in the affirmative.
