Spartans Make Only One
Field Goal First Half;
Suprunowicz Top Scorer
By Dave Tefft
Michigan basketball forces to-
day wrote finis to a successful reg-
;ular season schedule and began
preparations for the first post-
reason activity in which a Wol-
verine cage team has ever in-
dulged.
Coach Ozzie Cowles' Big Nine
titlists concluded their 21-game
Season here Saturday night by
walloping a lethargic Michigan
State team, 69-28, in a game made
boresome by the Spartans' refusal
- to put up a battle. The victory
gave Michigan revenge in full for
a Dec. 18 loss, 43-38, at State's
•hands at East Lansing and also
continued the Wolverines' record
of not having lost both ends of the
annual two-game series with the
East Lansing school since 1932.
Win 'Em All At Home
Additionally, Saturday night's
triumph gave Michigan a perfect
home season with nine wins in as
many starts and continued a con-
y secutive game victory streak
'' through the eighth game. The Wol-
n -.-.,;,»„,; haven't been defeated on
; rtwood since Ohio State sur-
0 pi.ui... them, 70-66, at Columbus
)t Feb. 2. Since then Michigan rolled
^ over Purdue twice, Indiana, Min-
y nescta, Illinois, Ohio, Iowa and
State in a great stretch drive that
1- brought them the Western Confer-
[0 ence title and an invitation to the
a eastern NCAA play-offs in New
ie York March 18 and 20.
s, Michigan's season record is 16
•n wins and five losses.
; Cowles said today he would rest
', the Wolverines until Wednesday
when they will begin preparations
for Michigan's first appearance in
NCAA basketball play.
Saturday's game had little to
recommend it to the average fan
but thn*- "'""• •"n fault of Michigan.
The V. s played what has
-itlhecome --,„ Jsual good brand of
isketball and exhibited their
in usual excellent defense. State,
of showing nothing of its early-sea-
>y son flash and fire, handled the ball
nicely but refused to shoot when
I's chances presented and appeared
-'nxious to end the season and get
over with.
^ Defense Must Work
1.0 The Spartans were limited to a
single field goal in the first half
I's and that, a long pitch by Bob Rob-
id bins, didn't come until 13 min-
?h utes of the contest had expired. It
was almost nine minutes before
MSC tallied again from the floor.
By then Michigan had extended
its 34-10 hp."'5"- lead to 37-10.
Lanky B :-ium, the State
center who nuiw^i-red from Ken-
•)$ tucky because Alex Groza took his
.d; job away from him there, ap-
' peared disdainful of the whole
A- business of basketball and merely
'A' filled his uniform and a spot on
the floor. Although he had scored
.); a total- of 333 points for an all-
.)' time Spartan record in State's
' previous 21 games, he didn't con-
iff nect on a field goal until the 36th
minute of Saturday's game here.
He later added another to his sev-
en free throw points for a total
of 11.
tnc Michigan scoring honors went to
.); handy Mack Supr'ns: < / who
;)» counted 15 points. I . ' Mor-
lill added 11 and Bill Roberts had
10.
