WPA Gives Approval To City Market

Start Of Construction In Near Future Seems Assured

Start of construction of a farmers market building on Detroit St. in the near future appeared assured today by approval of the project by President Roosevelt for WPA aid.

Word of the President’s action was received by Mayor Walter C. Sadler in a telegram from Congressman Earl C. Michener in Washington.

The WPA grant will provide $11,141 of the total cost of $21,228 and the city will furnish the balance. The market will be constructed of structural steel with a corrugated metal roof.

As proposed, the public walks and the display spaces will be covered, while the parking space for trucks will be open. The construction will include a brick building which will provide for the office of the market, a meat inspector’s room, and a comfort station. The interior of this building will be of glazed brick.

The market will be built between Detroit St. and S. Fourth Ave. at its present location. Discussed for several years, the project was submitted in its present form for a WPA grant on Feb. 20. City officials estimate it will require about four months to build.

Concrete walks will be provided while oil aggregate, a mix, will be used for the parking spaces.
