Gasoline Law

'HELSEA —Archie W. Wilkin-

'.vhich resulted in the
adoption ol a law requiring that
bulk gasoline be sold in red cans,
died here Friday.

An attorney since 1887 and a
lifelong Chelsea * resident, Mr.
Wilkinson got the red can safety
measure through the Legisla-
ture after his appointment as
deputy state oil inspector during
the late 1890's.

He died at his home at 19650
Old US-12, where he had been
bedridden for three years due to
failing health.

family, Mr. Wilkinson read

attorney following his gradua-
tion from Chelsea High in 1883.

In partnership with the late
George W. TurnBull of Chelsea,
he began his law practice in 1888.

Mr. Wilkinson was associated,
in the early 1900's, with The Ann
Arbor News. In 1908, in partn-

ship with Orrin T. Hoover, pub-
lisher, he purchased The Chealsea
Standard, a weekly publication,
and was with the paper until
1914. During 1919-20 he was con-
nected with t' ' ''el Manufac-
turing Co., a :;;;•! ' ill factory at
that time in the Wilkinsonia
Building on N. Main St. in Chel-
• •» a building which he owned.

.-.orn June 29, 1865, in Chelsea,
he was the son of Thomas and
Roxa Winans Wilkinson.

He was married Sept. 2, 1920,
to the former Ruth J. Howe, who
survives. Also surviving are a
son, Archie W., jr., at home, and
a daughter, Mrs. L. M/Dunn of
Parma, 0.

Funeral services will be at 2
p.m. Monday at the Staff an Fu-
neral Home. with the Rev. S. D.
