The necesity of making our faith correepond with our works, begins to be feit in uil Ihe departments of benevolence more and more fully. It is found necessary to not only to pray to God that oppression.may cease in the earlh, but to exert ourselves indtvidually that we maybe co„workers togeiher with Ilim in removing every e vil, by our example- our iufluckice, and our votes. In like manner those who labor in the temperance cause begin to perceive that they cannot consis-, tently ask God to give them rulers who will aid ihem in their effurts to reclaim tho miemperate, while themselves conspire to defeat the designs of Heanea and the object of their own prayers, by voling for men who will oppose by their official acts that cause which Ileaven oppFOves, and fur the success of which they labor and pray. The Michigan Temperance Advócale for October has the following on this subject: "Can you who pray for your rulers. give the whule of your influence for the elcction of men to be "ministers of God,"whcse very principies are opposed to God; - expecl them lo do God's pleasure in advancing the best good of the whole com-. munity, and alter they are elected pray that Hu wi!l blcss them? You are re- quired lo pray for your rulers - you are held accountuble on this point. But ia, the case before us, you have done your utmost lo place men in power, whose prin-. ciples if carried out, would lead them to. abuse that power; and then you pray that. they may üe good rulers and act contrary to tlieir principies! Your conduct woulé be no more inconsistent, were you lo set a wolf or tiger to watch your flock, and ask God to make him a faiihful watch-dog; or place your pruperiy in the hands of rob,, bers, depending upon the Lord to keep. jj safe, If the friends of lemperancc belict (hat God reigns, (and who dare deny it?) let them sec whom they olect to office."
