Religión and slavery cannot live ío geiher. Religión teuches mankind to íove onesnothur, and to do justice to all men. Siavery necessarily requires one man to do injustico to another; it cannot exist without it. It canout exst without the exercise of all the grosser forms of wickedness in direct violation of all the principies of religión. The grea constituent principie of slavery is njustice of one man to anoiher, and this leading prin ciple carried out into practico divulges itself in all ihe fornis of wickedncss of which ilie mind can conceive. Any sysem of religión which toleróles or sustnins such a system of wickedness, cannot be beneficial to mankind. It is absulutely impossible for a man to love liis bruiher man as himself, and at tho same time, perpétrate upon himall the mulliplied wrongs that necessarily pertain to &lavery;and when these wrongs are perpetratedunder ihe pretended sanction of religión, artd oí that gosp.il which is to lead all men to the goal of happiness, they become doubly aggravating to human nature. - When men commit (heseaggravaiions upon their fcllow men, under the pretence that they are sanctioned by Christianily, they charge God Almighty wilh having given to man a system of religión whieh authorizes him todo unlimited injuslico lo liis fellow man, whenever he can obtain the power; and in doing thia injustice he Í3 not only guilty of the wroug act, but claims Almighty God for his partner and supporter in the prosccutiou of of all the villanies that uecessarily belong to theslave aystem.
