Orpheum To Open On Week-Ends

Will Show Imported And Some Re-Run Pictures

Ann Arbor’s fifth theater—the Orpheum—is scheduled to re-open next Friday under a new week-end policy which will screen only imported films and returns of the most celebrated Hollywood productions.

The little (500 seats) house in the 300 block of S. Main St. has been dark since Feb. 3, 1945.

Workmen and technicians are refurbishing the Orpheum this week and installing a new sound system.

Five-Week Season

Gerald Hoag, manager of the Michigan Theater and spokesman for the W. S. Butterfield chain which operates both houses, said the Orpheum will present a five-week Fall season, close for the holidays, and open in January for a five-week Spring run.

Films will be shown only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Hoag said, under a continuous policy beginning at 1:30 in the afternoon.

He said his company regards the two five-week showings as an experiment and that continuation of the Orpheum's operation depends on how well the Ann Arbor public receives this type of film fare.

Prices have been set at 50 cents, including tax, per patron at all times. There will be no children's price.

Opened In 1913

The Orpheum has been in off-and-on operation in Ann Arbor since it first opened Sept. 21, 1913. It was closed in 1929, opening again as a modern theater in 1935 when it showed third-run movies.

First attraction for the fall season will be “Pearls of the Crown," a French dialogue film with English subtitles. Its star is Sascha Guitry. Walt Disney’s renowned "Three Little Pigs” cartoon is also on the bill.

The following week-end the Orpheum will show “Anthony Adverse,” with a French picture entitled "Confessions of a Rogue” scheduled to come in Nov. 26.
