Majestic Theater Razing Approved

Further moves toward completion of parking lot plans for the Majestic Theater site and the First and Washington Sts. location were made by the City Council last night.

The councilmen accepted the offer of the Capitol City Wrecking Co. of Lansing to raze the theater building and an adjoining house at a net cost of $1,000 to the city.

Appropriations totaling $4,140 for the First and Washington Sts. project were voted. Of this amount, $2,640 is for preliminary payment to architects for plans of a three-decker parking structure and $1,500 is for erection of an attendant’s shelter.

Street To Be Widened

Widening of S. First St. four feet on the east side between Washington and Liberty Sts. was also given approval as a part of the plans for that area.

A third parking project—the city’s S. Fifth Ave. lot—came up for brief consideration. City Attorney William M. Laird was instructed to determine the official status of Council efforts to buy two properties on S. Division St. Differences of opinion were expressed as to whether the last action was to order condemnation or to refer the matter back to the real estate committee.

Owners have rejected the city’s last offers of $40,000 for a site at 620 S. Division St. and $16,500 for property at 326 S. Division St.
