Spanish War Veteran Dies At Grand Rapids
BRIGHTON - Henry W. Gangnuss, 83, a Spanish American War veteran and a former teacher, accountant and attorney, died Sunday morning at the Veterans Facility Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he had been hospitalized for several months.
He came to Brighton to live in the 1920's and had lived here since.
He was born on May 15, 1870, in Sebewaing, a son of Henry and Barbara Gangnuss. He came with his parents to Genoa township, Livingston county, in 1885. He attended Michigan State Normal College at Ypsilanti and later taught in Livingston county schools for a number of years.
He then took a job as an accountant in Flint and there joined the National Guard in 1898. He served in the Spanish-American War in Cuba from the spring to the fall of 1898.
He then volunteered for service in the Philippine Islands and rose to assistant chief accountant. On one of his furloughs, he traveled around the world, visiting relatives in Germany.
After his enlistment ended, he entered the University of the Philippines and graduated as an attorney. He became a champion golfer in the Philippines.
Returning to the United States in 1920, he entered Columbia University. He came to Brighton from Columbia and has lived here since.
He was a member of the Spanish-American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, United Spanish Veterans and St. George's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Conrad, Mrs. John Herbst and Mrs. Charles Herbst, all of Brighton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the St. George's Church, with the Rev. Paul Geiger officiating. Burial will be in Genoa Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Keehn Funeral home.
