Dr. Richard H. Kingery, professor emeritus in the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, died Dec. 25 in Ann Arbor. He was 81.
Kingery joined the U-M faculty as an instructor in the dental school in 1925, rising to assistant professor in 1928, associate professor in 1935 and full professor in 1937. He retired from the faculty in 1974 and ended his private practice of dentistry a year later.
Dr. William R. Mann, dean of the U-M School of Dentistry, said today, "In his long period of service to the school of dentistry, Dr. Kingery contributed greatly to its excellent reputation. He was an extremely skilled clinician who possessed the personality and ability to motivate students to master his teachings. This was true whether the student was a beginner in dental school or a practitioner returning for continuing education.
"Dr. Kingery was a favorite with students and colleagues alike."
Kingery was born Sept. 4, 1898, in Buchanan, Mich. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Michigan State College in 1920 and his doctor of dental science degree from U-M in 1924.
He served as a member of the executive committee of the dental school from 1939 to 1942, was a civilian consultant at the Percy Jones Hospital in Battle Creek and the Veterans Administration, was vice president and president of the American Board of Prosthetic Dentistry and was a postgraduate lecturer at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Kingery was a member of the Michigan State Dental Society, the American Academy of Prosthetics, the American Academy of qlastic Research in Dentistry, the American Academy of Cleft Palate Prosthetics, the American Association of Dental Research and Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity and was an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Upsilon and Phi Sigma.
He is survived by his wife, Laura E.; a daughter, Beverly Jeanne Giltrow of Ann Arbor; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Ann Arbor. Cremation has taken place.
