The Ann Arbor manufacturing plant of Northern Telecom-Ltd. will be closed in an effort to reduce losses of the Canadian telecommunications firm, the company said today.

The closing of the Ann Arbor plant is part of a company-wide reduction of 600 workers, all part of the company’s U.S. operations, Northern Telecom Systems Corp.
Northern Telecom also said today it was writing off about $17.7 million of unamortized goodwill relating to the purchase of Sycor and a Minneapolis compu-geer firm in 1978. The company’s research and development division will remain here, officials said.
