First published in the Edinburgh Literary Journal in 1831 under the pseudonym "Gertrude."
Go, when the mormng shinethj Go, when the mom is brightj Go, 'when the eve dechneth, Go in the hush of night; Go with pure rnind and feelingi Fling earthly tlioughts away, And in the charnber kneeling, Do thou in secret pray. Remember all who Iove thee, Aii who r.re Iovëd by thee; Pray too Ãor those that hate thee, lf'any sucli thyself, there be; Then (or thyself, in ineekness, A blcssing humbly claim, And link with eacli petition The great Redeemer's name. Or if'tis e'er dcnied thee In solitude to pniy, Should holy thoughts come o' er thee, When friendsaie 'round thy way. E'en then the sudden breaihing Thy spirit raised above, Will reach His throne of glory; Who is Mercy, Truth, and Love. Oh! not a joy or blessing With this can we compare, The power that hc hathgiven us To pour our soulsin prayer? Whene'er thou pinest in sadncss, Before His footstool fall; Remember in thy gladness His Iove who gave ihne all.
