Matmen Are Defeated By Indiana, 17-9

Ineligibility Wrecks Wolverine Squad Before Meet

Old Man Eligibility took a fall out of the Michigan wrestling squad yesterday afternoon and last night the Big Ten championship Indiana squad hopped on the Wolverines to gain a 17-9 decision in a dual meet at the Yost Field House.

Five of the Michigan grapplers whom Coach Cliff Keen planned to use in the meet, were declared ineligible including Capt. Bill Combs, Jack Butler, Jim Wilson, Tom Sparks and Fred Klemach.

Having no 121-pounders, Coach Keen was forced to put himself behind the eight-ball right at the start of the meet by forfeiting the bout in the 121-pound class.

Indiana then won four decisions to Michigan’s three in the remaining matches. Wolverine victories were scored by Art Paddy 155 pounds, Ray Deane 145 and Jim Galles 175. The summary:

121-pounds: defaulted by Michigan.

128-pounds: Joe Sparks, Indiana, defeated Weldig, Michigan, 8-5.

136-pounds: Wilson, Indiana, defeated Barnett, Michigan, 5-1.

145-pounds: Deane, Michigan defeated Burns, Indiana, 6-5.

155-pounds: Paddy, Michigan, defeated Gill, Indiana, 18-2.

165-pounds: Lazzara, Indiana, defeated Courtright, Michigan, 6-4.

175-pounds: Galles, Michigan defeated Traster, Indiana, 3-2.

Unlimited: Tremble, Indiana, defeated Lockwood, Michigan, 13-3.
