- Aniong tliose3 of the miseries ot nations, ie the divorce which has takeu place beiweeii politics and raorality; nor can we hope for butler days, until, this breaeh be healed. Men, inirusied with goveminent, have always been dispoeed to regard themselves ns absolved ir Jtn the claims of justice and humanity. Fakehoóda and frauds aro allowed tlie:n for tlieir own country, or their party. - To maintain ilieinsolves againit their opponents, they niay even involve naiions in war; and iho murders and robberies whicli 1'oJlow this crime, ate not visited on their heails by human justice. In all times, provernnient haabeen the grand robber, the grand murderer; and yet hns escaped iho deep reprobaiion which breaks forth ngaiitst private guilt. Sueh proiligacy pervadss the ephere of poüiical action, that the conhdence of the peopie is wcll nigh withdrawn from pohtical men; and a virtuous stnicsmun is involved in the suspicions whieh his unprinciplnd nssocintea have drawn pon his vocation. Public lile is thought io release men not on!y from the obligationa of justice, but from the restraints of good mannersi and, accordingly, the debates of Congress are too often pollutcd by vulgar abuse, threats nnd brawle. Religión, the only true guide of Hfe, the guardián and inspiror of all virtues. should especially reign over thedeliberations of govermnents, by which the weal and wo of nations, the solemn questions of peace and war, of lile and death, are determined. On this account, every man who has studied human duty. human perfection, human happiness, has a nght, and is bound to speak on maners of public concern, though his judgment may be contemned by hackneyed puliticians. It seems, indeed, to be thought by some, that politics are mysteries which only the initiated must deal with. Bnt in this country, they bclong to the people. Public questions are, and ought to be subjetul to tke moral judgment of Üie community. They ought to be reièrred to the religión we profess. The high and low, public and private men, are alike to bow before it. To remove any spliere of human nction from its cognizance, is virtunlly to deny its divinity. and to
