Lord Stanley, ín his place in the ïïouse of Commons, quotcd a fow weeks ago, the foliowing testimony of Sir C. Metcalfe, ]atO Governor of Jamaica: - "The improving condilion of the people is very striking and gratfying. I do not suppoee that any peasantry1 .n the world are bo well off. Their heh&viour is peaceab!c,ond,in sorae respect9,ndmirable; they are fond of attending divine services, and they are peen in their respectivo' churches and chapéis dressed ingood clothesy and are frequent 1 y seen on tiie Sundays Valking in the public proraenadeR and occasonally even on horeeback. They send their children to schools, and the Baptist communities not only provide the whole expense of their religious establishment, but pay the amount of a considerable contribution toward6 the support of their ministers; their morality is much improved, and their sobriety ia remarkable, - I am happy to add, that, in most respecta, they deserve their good fortune. They are generally sober; free from crime; much improved in1 their moral position; eonstant in their attendance of public worshipjeolicitious of odiicatiori, and willing to pay the expense of it."
