Andrew P. Mast Dies; Two Howell Residents Also Crash Victims
An Ann Arbor resident and two Howell men were killed early today when their four-place private airplane crashed near Stillwater, Okla.
The victims were Andrew P. Mast, about 40, of 5 Ridgmore Dr., Ann Arbor; William E. Smyth, 38 of 622 Dearborn Ave., Howell; and Sam Lyle Glenn, 48, of 3565 W. Grand River Ave., Howell.
Press association reports of the accident said the plane crashed about 6:10 a.m. today in an isolated farming area near Stillwater. The wreckage was not located for nearly four hours.
Heard Plane's Roar
Farmers in the area had reported hearing the roar of a low-flying plane and seeing a blinding flash of light, followed by the sound of a crash. A searching plane spotted the wreckage from the air, and highway patrolmen went to the scene.
The patrolmen radioed that the three men were the only occupants of the plane. Identification was made from papers found on the victims.
The plane, a new Cessna four-seater, was owned by Smyth, who presumably was piloting it at the time of the accident.
An employe at the Ypsilanti insurance agency which Mast operates said the three men had left Ann Arbor Wednesday morning on a combined business and pleasure trip to Texas, where they were to look at some house trailers. They were scheduled to return today, and apparently were on their way home.
Operated Insurance Agency
Mast operated the Andy Mast Insurance Agency at 31 N. Washington St., Ypsilanti, and also dealt in used cars. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. A brother, Walter, operates the Mast Shoe Store in Ann Arbor.
Smyth and Glann together operated an auto parts firm at Howell, and Smyth also owned a garage there. Smyth is survived by his wife and two daughters, aged 10 and 3. Glenn has a wife and a daughter, 14.
