Suspect Arrested In Fatal Shooting

YPSILANTI — Police last night arrested a 21-year-old Romulus man in connection with the fatal street shooting of a 23-year-old Ypsilanti basketball player.

Police took into custody Clark Lester, who yesterday had moved into a downtown Ypsilanti Hotel. Officers arrested Lester in his room in connection with the murder of Robert W. Ray of 801 Campbell, who died after being shot last Thursday night in front of 610 N. Adams.

Ray apparently was shot because he had turned his car a little far into an Ypsilanti intersection and the car driven by Lester had to swerve to avoid it, authorities said.

Two teammates who were

with Ray said the car turned and followed Ray’s car, coming abreast of it in front of 610 N. Adams.

When Ray started to get out of his car, he was shot in the chest by a .22-caliber pistol. He died after being admitted to Beyer Memorial Hospital.

The passenger who was in the car with Lester walked into the Ypsilanti Police station at 8:30 p.m. yesterday and said Lester was the one involved, police reported.

Unidentified by police, the passenger said he did not learn until later that Ray died of the gunshot wound. He said the night of the shooting he was dropped off at the downtown hotel where he lives, and Lester went back to Romulus, officers added.
