Mrs. Bessie Townley Succumbs At Her Home
Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Townley, past president of the Ann Arbor Woman's club, and prominent in club and social circles of the city, died yesterday afternoon at her home at 1310 Washtenaw Ave. She was the widow of L. A. Townley, who died 18 years ago.
Mrs. Townley, a resident of Ann Arbor since 1906, was a member of Chapter G, P.E.O., a past president of the Grandmothers' club, and a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was active also in the First Presbyterian church.
She was born May 16, 1861, in Cuba, Mo., a daughter of Izaac and Helen King Tyler. She was married to Lewis A. Townley in Pontiac, Ill., Feb. 26, 1878. They moved to Birmingham, Ala., in 1882, and to Ann Arbor in 1906.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Kate Bostick of Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Mabel Plunkett of Detroit, and Mrs. Lois Place of Detroit; and two sons, Lewis Ackley Townley of Ann Arbor, and George Tyler Townley of Pelham Manor, N. Y.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Muehlig chapel, where friends may call. Dr. William P. Lemon will officiate. Interment will be made in Forest Hill cemetery, with the burial rites to be conducted privately.
