The whole number of new patents issued during the year 1842, was 439. üf these, 422 were tnkcn out by ciiizens of fiee States, and l7 only, by those of elave States! Citi- zens of Marylund, (chiefly of Baliimore) wiiich approximate a región of light, look one third of the whole nu mber granted to slnve States. But one was taken in Louisiana, nnd that was for an invention to keep off'insects,' - proba bly mu.ketoes. Kentucky took one for 'measunng garments.' New York took 140 for nlmost evory useful purpose to which free labor can devote ts elastic energies. . Massnchusetts took 70, Pennsylvania 65, Ohio 45, Coniiecticut 25. These facts are not only striking in Ihem selvcs but iüustrate the two sections of country - ratiier Iiberty and slavery - in every respect whcre a comparison can be drawn. The nation is like a man with one half seized by paralysis. - Liberty Standard. Among the items of extra vaance for the past year is one of L55 13s. 6d. for nltering the Pnnce of VVales's Anne. We presume this must refer to the n' ecspary enlargetnent of the Bleeves of all ihe Royal Highness's frocks. It is a curious fact, that as the sleeve comes down only an inch below the shoulder, his Roynl Higlinces is lilerally out at elbowe.
