At a meeting ufa niimber of nhabitants of the Townshipsof Wayne and Lagrange, Cass County, friendly to the cause of Anti-slavery, held at the house of Shepherd W. Wheeler, of Lagrange, Jane 19, 1843; Wells Crumb was called.to the Chair, and John S. Gage of Waync, vaa chosen Secretary Pro. tem. - The following prca mblc and rciolutions were unanitnously adopted.Whcreas God liath raadc of ono blood all mankind and cik'owoc! tlicm wit.h tho enme desirè fox the cnjoyment of liberty and happiness: and whcreas the Dcclaration of Amorican Iudcpendcnce virlually sets forth the seF evident truth, that liberty is evidently the inalienable right of all men, and whereas stavery to wbicb more than two millions of our American countrymen are subject, is contrary Lo oqual rights and natural jnsticc, to the holy religión of Christ. and detrimental to the sproud of the gospel, a sin and reproach to our nation, and one great cause of tho present cmbarrasscd condition of our finances, susfaining the lynch and the gag-, we therefore to carry out the truc republican principiéis of our venerable anecstors, wlio, 'Jeclaring this land to be nn r.sylum for the oppressed which has been a name and a praise in the whule earth : Resolved, that wc npprovc of tho coursc pursued by Adains, Giddings, Sliule, and their associates in regard to the subject of slavery. Resolved, th.it it is derogatory to our national character to curtail in any way the right of petition. Resolved, that wc view it highly important that political action shouM be resorted to on the subject of slavery . Resolved, thal it is our firm belief that if" the ininds of the people throughouL the Union were rcalty known, that slavery vvould ceasc to exist in our beloved country.
