LASC Sponsors Free Film Series

Are you concerned that the U.S. government has spent $3.6 billion in the past nine years to support the government of El Salvador? Does it disturb you that this government has killed 70,000 of its own citizens during this same period of time? Are you opposed to U.S. support for contra rebels fighting to overthrow the democratically-elected government of Nicaragua? Ever feel like you aren't gettĂng the whole story from The New York Times, the Ann Arbor News, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, or Oliver North? Want to learn more about U.S. involvement in Latin America? Want to work to change things?

If your answers to the above questions are yes, the Latin American Solidarity Committee (LASC) could be just the group for you. We are committed to education and action in support of the right of self-determination for Latin American peoples. Our activities include education about historical and current realities in the region and the role of U.S. foreign policy in Latin American conflict. We oppose U.S. intervention and work to end U.S.-sponsored war and repression throughout Latin America.

In Jan. and Feb., LASC will be sponsoring a film series on Central America and the Caribbean. All films will be shown Thursday evenings at 8 pm, and admission is free. Check the CALENDAR (pages 7 - 8) for titles and locations of showings.

Our mass meeting for Winter term will be held Wed., Jan. 11 at 8 pm in 2209 Michigan Union. The video "Cover-Up", which exposes the involvement of Bush and North in the Iran-Contra connection, will be shown, followed by discussion. Everyone is welcome - don't miss it.

On Jan. 9, there will be a meeting for all groups and individuals who would like to particĂpate in planning an inauguration-day demonstration for Jan. 20. We hope to impress upon the new President and Congress our expectations for the new administration, and to demand that Bush live up to his campaign rhetoric of working for a "gentler and kinder nation. Meet at the Guild House, 802 Monroe St , at 6 pm.

We welcome all who are in general agreement with our ideas to attend our weekly meetings, Wednesdays at 8 pm in the Michigan Union. We have an office on the U-M campus, 4120 Michigan Union, open 12 to 2 pm weekdays, with numerous periodicals available on Latin America and related topics. Anyone is welcome to stop by during office hours and use these resources. For more information about LASC or our events, or if you'd like to be added to our mailing list, please call us at 665-8438.
