WAND: Stop the MX in its Tracks

WAND (Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament) is part of the coalition sponsoring two important events to help prevent the Air Force from deploying MX missiles on the public railroads throughout Michigan. At a public hearing on Monday, June 4 at 7:30 pm, members of WAND, SANE/Freeze, Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, Physicians for Social Responsibility and other local groups will describe to the Ann Arbor City Council the danger posed to Ann Arbor residents by the MX rail plan. Because the City Council will vote on on a resolution opposing the MX Rail Garrison, those who share our concern are strongly encouraged to call the Mayor and their Councilmembers by June 4 and to be at the public hearing that night.

The second event is 'Stop the MX in its Tracks," a car caravan to Lansing assembling at 10am Saturday, June 16 at the city parking lot near the railroad tracks at William & First (behind Schlenker's Hardware). Bring a sack lunch, signs and car decorations, or meet us later in Lansing for a rally on the Capitol steps at 2 pm. Call 663-1870 for more information.

"Military Spending and the Health Status of Mothers and Children" will be the topic addressed at the next WAND meeting. Kristine Siefert, Associate Professor at the U-M School of Social Work, will discuss how we can be more effective at reordering federal spending priorities in light of the United States' ranking as first among nations in military spending, 13th in maternal mortality and 21st in child mortality. Professor Siefert is co-chair of the dial master's degree program in social work and child and family health, a past member of the State of Michigan Statewide Task Force on Infant Mortality, and a consultant to the Office of Maternal and Child Health, U.S. Public Health Service. She will examine the implications for our work today, of the efforts of the women across the country to lobby for legislation establishing the first federally supported maternal and child health programs in 1921. The meeting begins at 7:30 pm, Sunday June 10 at St. Aidan's/Northside Church, 1679 Broadway.

Purpose: WAND's goals are to educate ourselves and the public about the dangers of the nuclear arms build-up (which the U.S. is escalating despite the end of the Cold War), to influence our congressional representatives by informed lobbying, to support peace and justice candidates, and to empower people, especially women, personally and politically.

Meetings are held the 2nd Sunday of the month (usually at 7:30 pm) at St. Aidan's/Northside Church, 1679 Broadway, Ann Arbor (across from the Baits Drive entrance to U-M North Campus.) Call 761-1718, for a message about important lobbying information and upcoming meetings and events. For information about Campus WAND, the student chapter at the U-M, or if you need a ride from campus, call Lissa Guenzel, 769-6570, or Sarah Cooley, 662-2475. For speakers who will address groups, classes, and public forums, contact Tobi Hanna-Davies at 662-7869.
