These words were addressed to a company of Abolitionists at the late Liberty Convention, by a man who had been made to see the unsoundness of all his other reasonings against human rights. The same words are often used by men similary situated. It is then the language of deiance and we care nothing for it. It is ho mere bravado of men who speak against their convictions. But it someimes is the language of distrust, and then t is any thing but encouraging. It seems o be admitted that a course is just, but the admission is accompanied by a strange want of ftiith in the power of the truth, to accomplish its high destiny. So it hasways been. All along, those who hav attesnpted any reibrmatory movement lave been dishearteaed by the sanaecry of 'you cannot succeecL" Thus it was with. Mloses whe he began the grea-t work of emancipatingthe Israelites from Egyptian bondage, arte restoring thein to their long ïTonwsed land. Thus it was when Neïemiah was engaged ïn rebmlding the walls of Jerusalem and reviving the worhip of the true God. Thus it was uith Liuther, when he attempted to wrest the power from the Pope, and breathe a spiritual life into the deod body of the Papal Chureh. Thus it was when Clarkson vent forth, single-handed and alone, lo do battle in defence of human rights. And hus it always is. At the very least, you have no courage to make an aggressive Ynovement, so that you withhold all aid, and so far as your influence is coacerned, there will be no success. But aro you free from blame, ín thus weakening the hands of those who labor to remove the popular evils of the times? "Yotí cannot succeed." Yes we can, if we have God and the truth with us, and if we have not, we don't want to succeed. But who ever failed. when founded upon the one, and having the aid of the other? Who needs to be discouraged? "You cannot succeed." Then pronounce your Bible a fable and your religión a lie. Then give yourseif up at once to Atheistic expediency, and renounce your God. But if there be any truth in "the Bible, any reality in religión, opposition cannot always resist their power. Truth and love will triumph, or the Bible is false in its promises, and religión in its hopes. If we are firmly planted on the one and animated and cheered by the hopes of the other, we have no occasion for discouragement. - Nay, we may expect to see much accomplished. We may be few in number and limited in resources. We may contend against a great arrny of power, but if we have the Lord on our side how maTiy shall he he counted for? If we keep Him with us. the day of our triumph ia hastening in the march of time. Truth does not depend upon the might of the many, It can conquer by few as well as
