Wherca, the time ia appioaching when, according lo a long established and well approved custom, observed by most of the States of this Union, the people unite in rendering Thanksgiving and praise to the great Giver of all good, and Whereas, though sanctioned by no logal authority, it has been cnstomary for the Chief Executive officer of the severnl States to recommend n particular day to bc set apart for such purpose, and JVhereas, it J6 a duty incumbent on all to render thanks to the Most High for Divine protection. Now, therefore, I, John S. Barry, Governor of the State of Michigan, have thought prop er to nppoint, and by these presents do ap point, Thnrsday, tiie thirtieth day oj JYovember next, ns ajday of public Thanksgivin and Prayer; and I do here recomtnend to the people of this State to set apart nnd observe the same accordingly: thatthey assemble on that day in their several places of public wor ship, anti with uniteil hoaris render nnfeigneJ thauks to the gjeat Maker and preserver of nll ihings, for the numberless blessings vouchsafed to us duriug the past year; th.it he has preserved our lives, maintained peace within our borders, stayed the pestilence, averfed famine, rewarded the husbandmen with abundant harvests, and preserved to us inviolate our civil and reiigious institulions, and with deep buniility, confessing our sins, give thanks for all his numerous mercies, and humbly ask a continuance of Divine favors. In testimony uhereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand, nnd causad tlio great seal of the State to be affixed. Done at the Capítol in the City of Detroit, this twenty-sixth [L. S.] duy of October, in the year of our Lord o;ie thousand eight hundred and forty three, and of the Indcpendence of the United States the sixty-eighth.
