Theodore H. L. Backus, well-known Ann Arbor businessman, died at his home, 1018 Vaughn St., yesterday afternoon following several weeks of illness. He was 67 years old.
Mr. Backus, who had been a partner in the Schumacher & Backus plumbing firm for 40 years, was born in La Porte, Ind., on June 13, 1876. He came to Ann Arbor 60 years ago and was educated in this city's public schools.
During his business career, Mr. Backus was largely responsible for the settling of the Buhr Machine and Tool Co. in Ann Arbor; introduced the first oil burners and air conditioning systems to the city's residents, and wrote the city's plumbing code which was adopted by city council in 1926. He had been a member of the city board of health. At the time of his death, he was a vice-president of the Buhr Machine Co.
Mr. Backus was a member of Fraternity Masonic Lodge and of the Ann Arbor Commandry of Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Moslem Shrine in Detroit and had been affiliated with the Shrine band for 25 years.
Professionally he was associated with the American Society of Heating and Ventilation Engineers.
Survivors include the wife, the former Amanda Steeb, Ann Arbor, whom he married on Dec. 10, 1906; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Adel, Mrs. Howard Efner and Miss Suzanne H. Backus, all of Ann Arbor, and a brother, Henry, also of Ann Arbor.
Funeral services will be held at the Muehlig chapel at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Henry Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
