YPSILANTI - Dr. Frederick R. Gorton, 72, for 50 years a member of the faculty of the physical science department of the State Normal College here, died Wednesday afternoon at his home, 217 N. Normal St., following a long illness. He was retired from the college two years ago.
He was born Sept. 16, 1871, at Waterloo, Mich., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gorton, and graduated from the Normal college in 1892, joining the faculty there the same year, where he remained until 1941 when he reached the retirement age. He received his master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1900, and from the University of Berlin in 1906. In 1893 he married Miss Jean Osgood, of Ridgeway, and the couple made their home here until Mrs. Gorton's death on Aug. 27, 1939.
Dr. Gorton was a member of the Methodist church, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the local Kiwanis club, the Michigan Schoolmasters' club, the Michigan State Teachers' Association, the Stoics, honor society at the college, the Faculty Men's club, the Twenty club, and was president of the Wesleyan Foundation at the college and treasurer of the College Loan Fund. He was for many years a member of the official board of the Methodist church here.
Surviving are two sons, Wendell V., Toledo; and Eugene, Ypsilanti; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Stevens & Bush funeral home here, with Rev. Walter B. Heyler officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery at Ridgeway.
