- The wliole nutnberofconvicto confinfiil in the Stnte Ptisori on Ihe 31st of October lasl, was 94. The nnmber receíved into the Privón during the year onding on thot dny, was 43; the nnmber diacharged during tlie same time, 36 - including 3 who escnped and 1 committed suicide. - Showing an increase of 7 d;.i ring ihe year. The ioïlowing is a recapitu!ation of the several contracts now in Torce, for the employmentof Ihe convicts in the diffi-rent mechanicnl Irades, viz: At s!oe rankïng,.t5 convict?; at making barrels, 15 convicts, at the rate of 38 cents per day,for the term of three yenre t'rom the lst of April, 1842;- alsosix convicts which areto be incrensed to the number of 15, at the wngon making business iuchiding the Heceesary blacksmith work connected with the same: at the rate of 33J cents per day, for the term of five years from April la$f ; and 10 convicts, which are to be increased to the number of 30, at the businefis of nianufacturing irnn machinery, castmgs of brass andiron.at the rat e of 30 cents per day, for the tertn of five years from the first of November last.- According to the provisions of the latler contract, the mnnufacture of threshing machines, pioughs, culi vators, and andirons, is prohibiited, in order to avoid to some ex tent direct collision wilh the interests of those citizens engaged in nianufacturing such articles. There hae been built, du ring the past year, 435 feet in Jength ofguard wal!, which leaves to be constructed, under the present plan 330 feet. A new work-shop líos besn constroeted in the place of chat which was burnt down dwing the last summer. It is built of brick, one sto.ry high, 35 feet wide, 200 feet long, vvitl) a brick partition across the centre, carriedu through and above the roof, fo as to prevent any cómmnnication of fire from one división of the shop to the other. During the last year, 18 new celia; on the second tier of the prison, were constructed, making 100 in all in a situation to be occupied.
