Albert Benz Dies After Heart Attack

Retired Businessman Helped Form City's First Chevrolet Agency
Albert E. Benz, 79, a retired Ann Arbor businessman who helped form the first Chevrolet Sales Agency in Ann Arbor, died this morning at University Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home yesterday. He lived at 810 Oxford Rd.
In 1915, Mr. Benz and his brother, Fred E. Benz, formed the Benz Brothers Chevrolet sales agency, which they operated until Albert Benz' retirement in 1924. Prior to that in 1903, Mr. Benz and another brother, Victor, had organized a farm implement business, also known as Benz Brothers, which their brother, Fred, joined later.
Mr. Benz was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Barton Hills Country Club and the Coral Gables, Fla., Country Club.
He was born June 26, 1876, in Webster township, a son of Gottlieb and Marie Koch Benz. On Sept. 5, 1900, he was married to Mary E. Benton of Dexter. She survives. They lived on a farm in Webster township until 1906, when they moved to Ann Arbor, where they made their home for the remainder of his life. Last month they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Benz is survived by his brother, Fred; two sons, Carroll A. of Ann Arbor and Robert G. of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. John R. Meadows and Mrs. Walter F. Meier, both of Ann Arbor, and Mrs. Margaret Raymond of Detroit. Also surviving are three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a sister, Mrs. Erwin Schmid of Ann Arbor.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Muehlig Chapel with the Rev. Merrill R. Abbey officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
