Local Artist Wins Award in Exhibit
An Ann Arbor artist, Leon A. Makielski of 750 Arlington Blvd., was notified yesterday that he was awarded second place in a “popularity" contest in connection with a recent Detroit Institute of Art exhibit.
A former University art instructor and currently a teacher in a Detroit art school in addition to maintaining studios in both Ann Arbor and Detroit, Makielski was one of a group of artists invited to show some of his works early this month on a “non-jury” basis. It permitted entry of his work without pre-judging because of his “substantial contribution to art in exhibiting in 20 or more Michigan art shows at the Detroit Institute of Art.”
The second “popular prize” went to Makielski on the basis of voting by visitors to the gallery. His traditional portrait of Miss Lillian Killutat of Detroit won a $100 award from an art supply company.
