C. H. McKinley, 59, News Manager, Dies

Ann Arbor News Executive Dies Heart Ailment Fatal To Newspaper Executive; Resided Here 28 Years Clare H. McKinley, manager of The Ann Arbor News for 28 years, died Saturday afternoon at his home, 405 Lenawee Dr. after an illness of four months due to a heart ailment. His age was 59. He was born at Caseville, Huron county, where he was introduced to the newspaper business in the weekly Critic, published by his father, John R. McKinley. The family moved in 1904 to St. Johns, where he obtained his high school education, completing it in 1908. Mr. McKinley then joined the staff of the St. Johns News, serving as advertising manager and performing other duties associated with publication of a weekly newspaper. His first daily newspaper experience was in the Lansing Journal's advertising department, from 1909 to 1910, when he became advertising manager of the Owosso Argus. A year later, at the age of 22, he became advertising manager of the Flint Journal. To Ann Arbor In 1920 In November, 1920, he came to Ann Arbor to assume management of The Times News, which later became The Ann Arbor News. Mr. McKinley was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Ann Arbor Rotary Club, Barton Hills Country Club, Ann Arbor Golf and Outing, Ann Arbor Club, University of Michigan Club, University Club, YMCA and Golden Rule Masonic Lodge. He had been a charter member of the Flint Rotary Club. In 1912 Mr. McKinley was married to Marion Gibsone Spencer of Ionia. He is survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. E. C. Thompson of Ann Arbor, and two brothers, John R. McKinley and William A. McKinley, both of Grosse Pointe. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, with Dr. Henry Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call this evening and tomorrow morning at Muehlig's Chapel. News To Close During Funeral Offices of The Ann Arbor News will be closed from 1:45 to 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, so that employees may attend the funeral service for Mr. McKinley.
