Dr. Brisbane orrivcd at Cincinnati in safety, with the precious charge for which he had periled his life. Twenty-seven Americans, whom he once held os slaves, and in the days of his darkness sold as slaves, and wliom he had i:ow retleemed and rescued out of the house of bondage at a cost of over $20,000. On tha 4th of March, the benevolent ladies of Cincinnnii held a meeting at the Baptist Church on Webster Street, for the purpose of providing for these destitute people. Large quant itiea of clotlies were sent in, and a great amount of materiaJs contributed, which we are informed, about foriy ladies were biisily engaged during the day jn making into garmente.Several speeches were made during the meeting by Messrs. Buffman, Lewis, Bouchor, and other gentlemen; and the deepest interest was mnnifested in the proceedings, by mnnyvho have not hitherto participated in slavery movements. Th $.ev J. Among other incidenls, he related the folio wing: While on the Alabama circuit, I spent the Sabbath wiih an old circuit preacher, who was also a doctor, near "the Horse Shoe," celebratedas General Jack?on's battle? round. On Mondny morning early; he was reading "Pope's Meseiah" to me, when his wife caflcd him out. I glanced in y eye out of the window and sbw a slave man standing by, end they consulting over him. Presently the doctor look a raw-hide from under his coat and begun to cut up the half-naked 5back of the alave. 1 saw six or seven inches of the skin turn up perfectly white at every stroke, until the whole back was red wilh gore. The lacerated man cried out some at firs; but at eveiy b!ow the doctor cried, ttwotCi ye hush! tvon't yehvsh!1 till tlie slave finally etood still and gronned. Aó soon as he done, he doctor carne in panting, alrcost out of breath, and addressing me 6ai5, "won't you go to prayer witk me, Sir .?" I feil upon my knees and prayed, but what I 6aid I kiiów not. When I came out the poor creature had crept up and knelt by the door during prayer, and his back waB a gore of blood quite to his heels. At a meeting. Mr. Boucher said a preacher, who was a planter, lold hira how he had given one of his man slaves 100 lashes for requesting his mast er to seil hina to anoth er pkntation, so that he might not see his wife cruelly whipt, as she had [been the day before, for refusing to be flogged by an underling driver, who was but a 6triplipg. And when he (Mr. B.) exclaimed at his atrocity, calling the preacher, a "bloody-fingered sinner," he seized his bat and left him abruptly, threatening, bowever, to bring him, (Boucher,) bcforo the next conference, - a threat, however, which he did not put in exe cution. Il is said, continued Mr. B., that we should seek first to convert the alaveholders, and through them get access to the slaves, and bring ihem to Christ. But the ihing ia utterly impracticable. I have tried it; and I know that, as a general thing, you can never get the elnve to seek religión while he knowa that you think his master is a Christian. The greatest difficulty you find in getting the slaves to listen to you is, that their masters are professors. Instead therefore of help'ng, it would absolutely hinder the slave's prospect of 6alvation, to convert nll the ma6ters to the religión which now exists there.Henry Clay is the embodan ent of Whig principies. He not only goes against the right of petition, but the right to "discuss." The following is from one of his speeches in 1837: "Discussion imples deliberation; deliberation is preliminary to action. The people of the North have no right to act upon the subject of southern slavery, and therefore they have no right to delibérate - no right to discuss." - Claifs Speech, 1837.
