The treaty for this object has been laid before the Senate, but their deliberations are made with closed doors. It is nov said that if annexation fails as a treaty, it will be immediately proposed by a joint resolution, which requires the assent o! onl y a majority of both Houses. In this wny it is thought the measurè can be consummated without much difficulty.OC0 On the first page will be found a reply of GerritSmith to the recent letter of C. M. Clay. This reply is publishing in New York in tract form, bound with the letter of Mr. Clay, so that the reader has both sides of the question at once. The State is to be flooded with them. The candor and kindness of Mr. Smilb's reply must commend its spirit to all good men, while the keenness of his logic cannot fail to carry conviction with it. Lend the paper to your néighbors, and ask them to read it. This letter of Mr. Clay, which the Whig papers hav so generally published,is doing good to th Liberty party.(t0 That Five Dollar story, on the first page - have you read it?
